Spots to Check Out
Oaktown Spice Shop: A visit to Oaktown Spice Shop is a must for every chef’s pantry. They offer exotic spices you can’t find elsewhere. Truly a joyful stop on the errand routine. Customers can step into a beautiful, nostalgic and aromatic world, smell their way through glass jars of spices, have a conversation about their next meal with the staff, and find inspiration for their cooking.
Shakewell: Shakewell is a yummy Med bistro serving Spanish tapas alongside beer, wine & killer cocktails. Dubbed “Oakland’s Favorite Mediterranean Restaurant and Bar,” this beautiful, airy spot leaves little to be desired. Chef Jen Biesty and general manager Tim Nugent designed Shakewell to be Medi-chic with Moorish accents, using reclaimed wood and organic elements. Warm service in a fun, casual dining room!
Children’s Fairyland: Children’s Fairyland is a kid’s amusement park with live animal storybook themes throughout (technically in Adam’s Point right next door). This whimsical place, which has been in business for 70 years, is accurately described by San Francisco Magazine as “as miniature and uncynical as a toddler’s beating heart.”
Grand Lake Kitchen: Grand Lake Kitchen is a gourmet deli with casual vibe and local fare. Looking to have an event catered? Look no further than the delicious half sandwiches, house pickles, burrata and asparagus, specialty salads, and classic beverages. They even offer a dog-friendly patio, so be sure to bring your fur babies with you!
A walk around Lake Merritt: spend some time getting to know the crown gem of Oakland circled with restaurant, mini-parks, and stunning vistas. Great for sunset viewing! The parks have recently been cleared of surrounding encampments to keep the public safe and healthy. Into birdwatching? Check out the free bird walk on the fourth Wednesday of each month!
